RHS to recruit record number of apprentices

The RHS is preparing for its largest intake of apprentices, increasing the number to 16 across its five gardens in 2020 and 18 in 2021. This includes RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford, RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon, RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex and RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Yorkshire.

Apprentices work full-time for two years alongside expert teams. They do this while studying for a Level 2 apprenticeship qualification on block release at college. Successful applicants will gain skills, knowledge and a behind-the-scenes insight into professional horticulture. This includes cultivating areas ranging from formal borders to fruit and vegetable gardens and learning about the role of plants in a changing climate, propagation and how to operate machinery.

RHS Garden Rosemoor also has its first opening for an arborist apprentice.

Applications for the RHS apprenticeship programme close on Sunday 1 March.

The two-year RHS Diploma in Horticultural Practice is an in-depth work-based student programme for those who already hold an apprentice-level qualification, and one-year specialist horticultural placements are also open for applications until 1 February.

Students get the chance to tend their own allotment, visit RHS Chelsea Flower Show and have their garden designs turned into reality, while the placements enable horticulturists to hone their skills in a specialist field such as growing alpines, edibles or tropical plants under glass.
