An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to join a small team, assisting with the maintenance and upkeep of a large commercial business site with extensive and mature grounds.
Within the last 10 years a major redevelopment project has taken place under the design of renowned landscape architect Tom Stuart Smith, including extensive re-landscaping and the installation of a wild flower meadow, an extended pond, prairie, and replanting throughout. The site is an 80,000 sq. ft. office environment set within 50 acres of landscaped gardens, woodland, agricultural land, meadow fields, roof gardens and greenhouse. The role also currently covers 3 residential properties as well as a smaller office building nearby.
Key responsibilities will include assisting the senior horticulturalist as part of a small team; nurturing the garden, in particular themed areas which have been developed to fit in with the company corporate culture, and ensuring they are in keeping with the original concept. Experience with tending trees, shrubs and perennials will be essential and an academic horticultural qualification and a spraying certificate are preferable. Excellent plant and horticultural knowledge covering all aspects of maintenance gardening will be required. Duties will include; watering, weeding, pruning and spraying etc. As part of a small team you will be involved with sowing and raising plants, shrub and tree maintenance, as well as propagating new plants. You must be confident with the use and basic maintenance of both hand and mechanical machinery, e.g. hedge cutters, mowers, strimmers, compact tractors etc. Other duties will include litter collecting, leaf blowing, and snow shovelling/gritting as required in winter months.
Hours of work would be 4-days / week (part time) or 5-days / week (full time) 7am to 4 pm (including 1-hour lunch unpaid.) This role will require the successful applicant to spend most of their working time outdoors in all weathers. Other working hours may occasionally be necessary, especially for snow shovelling/gritting for which overtime will be paid.
